This is a collection of three essays which explore various sieges, the first discusses the siege of the Peking Embassy, 1900. The Boxer movemnnt in China was a secret society which preached hatred of foriegners. By the spring of 1900, this movement was out of control. On 9 June, the Boxers launched their first attack against foreign propert in Peking by burning down the racecourse. The second essay is a study of the siege of Kars. In 1855, while the British Army was fighting alongside the French and the Turkish armies in the Crimean War, a little-known but serious siege was taking place in the city of Kars in eastern Turkey. The third essay looks at the Boer War which is often regarded as one of the first modern wars, as the British Army using traditional tactics, came to close to being defeated by a Boer force which deployed what was almost a guerilla strategy in punishing terrain.
