Cocker, former principal of Ranmoor College, Sheffield, established in 1863, with the intention of teaching mental and moral philosophy and logic alongside the required theological education to students to the Ministry, closing in 1919 when all students were transferred to Manchester under the United Methodist Free Churches. Cocker's obituary; We regret to announce the death of the Rev. Dr. Cocker, which has occurred at his residence in Brocco Bank, Sheffield. He was 85 years of age. In August last his health gave way. Dr. H. T. Wightman, of Brocco Bank, attended him, but he grew gradually weaker, and passed away on Monday. The deceased was a well-known member of the Methodist New Connexion body. For ten years he was Principal of Ranmoor College. He took that position in 1876, and retired in 1885, having completed fifty years' service in the ministry. Before coming to Sheffield he had travelled Leeds, Longton, and other circuits, and was for six years in Canada as superintendent of the Connexional Missions there. Twice he filled the office of President of Conference, first at Leeds, and next at Longton. He was also a guardian representative of the denomination. On leaving Ranmoor College, the deceased was superannuated. A short time afterwards fifty of his former students, men then in the ministry, made him a presentation consisting of a silver salver, bearing in its centre an engraving of the College, an illuminated address, and an autograph album. For some time after his active career was over he resided in Leeds, and for several years he lived in Southport. Dr. Cocker, who was a native of Calver, was a man of fine physique, and in temperament was one of those likeable strong-willed men, who could argue his point in a breezy, good-natured way. He was a staunch believer in the principles of Liberalism, so ardent, in fact, was he in his advocacy that many members of his own party were sometimes inclined to regard him as an extremist. But this was just the title he was over anxious to avoid. He was a man of strong individuality and pronounced views, but both politically and theologically he was tolerant. He stuck hard for the opinions he held dear, and at political meetings now practically forgotten he was a rousing force. Gifted with a rare command of language he quickly caught the ear of an audience, and his listeners, whether they agreed or disagreed with his opinions, admired the force and lucidity with which he presented his arguments, and, above all, that spirit of combativeness which was the inspiration of all his utterances. He never lost his faith in Liberal principles, but like many more of his party he abhorred a spirit of narrowness in National affairs. The truth is, that had Dr. Cocker been a younger man, his voice would have been heard during the past few years, not in antagonism to Liberalism, but as a call to his party to place Imperial interests above any temporary political advantages at home.
