About the Author: 'John Tong is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, and rector of the Holy Spirit Seminary in Hong Kong. Born in Hong Kong in 1939, he later lived with his parents in Guangzhou City and Hua County, Guangdong Province, China, during and following the Japanese invasion. He received his formation for the priesthood at St. Joseph's Minor Seminary, Macau, and did his theological and philosophical studies at the Regional Seminary in Hong Kong and the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. He also studied Chinese Philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Bishop Tong has been teaching dogmatic theology and Chinese philosophy at the Holy Spirit Seminary College since 1970. Since 1980 he has been the Director of the Holy Spirit Study Centre, a Hong Kong diocesan institute concerned with the Catholic Church in China. He has visited China and the Catholic Church there almost 80 times. In 1992, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Hong Kong and was ordained a Bishop on December 9, 1996.?
