A rare article from the Cornhill Magazine, 1871. Description: The Cornhill Magazine, London, 1871. First Edition, Disbound. Very Good Condition. HMS?áMegaera?áwas originally constructed as an iron screw?áfrigate?áfor the?áRoyal Navy, and was one of the last and largest ships built by?áWilliam Fairbairn's?áMillwall shipyard. Poorly built and deemed unsuitable as a warship, the Megaera was used as a freight and troop carrier, though it struggled in the role due to the defects in its design. In May 1871 she was sent on a voyage to Australia from South Africa with?á42 officers, 180 sailors, and 67 recruits. The ship quickly began to take on water, and with Australia still 1800 miles away, a decision was taken to beach on the St. Paul Island where the ship could be inspected. With no hope of repair the entire crew and passengers were stranded until subsequently rescued, though there was no loss of life at all. The outcome was such that the Captain, Thrupp, was court martialled in Plymouth, England, and a Royal Commission was set up to enquire into the loss. Thrupp was honourably acquitted as his actions were deemed justified. Note; this is an original article separated from the volume, not a reprint or copy. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 12 pages.
