Comes Britanniae Eiusque Insignia. Framed & Glazed, 12 x 16.5 inches (7 x 11 inches page). From the Notitia utraque dignitatum cum Orientis tum Occidentis ultra Arcadii Honoriique by Guido Panciroli. Description: Apud Ioan. Antonium & Iacobum de Franciscis, Venetiis, 1603. Very Good condition. A single printed leaf, framed & glazed, 12 x 16.5 inches (7 x 11 inches page showing). This is an anonymous and extremely simplified representation of the British Isles. The outline of England and Scotland is recognisable only in that it is slightly narrower at the top (north) than the bottom (south). The only internal feature of the island is a fortress of fantastical design, incorporating features of Romanesque, Gothic and Dutch medieval architecture. In the top left hand corner is a book with the words ‘FL.INTALL COMORD PR’ on the cover. It is not certain what is meant by this but it is thought that they refer to the ensign of a general who, under the Roman occupation, held a roving commission to defend the island. The map is from a work entitled Notitia Utraque…which was a late Roman document of civilian and military office-holders and was often accompanied by manuscript maps of various locations (British Library). Size: Folio (7 x 11 inches). Quantity Available: 1. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; New Arrivals; Inventory No: 309422.
