HARTON F P - Mystery of the Cross

Title: Mystery of the Cross
Description: A R Mowbray, UK, 1940. First Edition, Softcover. Fine Condition. 80 pages, size 6.5 inches tall by 4 inches, in card covers. ' The dark days of crisis are demonstrating with increasing clarity the bankruptcy of the merely human will to good and showing us beyond possibility of doubt that if mankind is to be saved from imminent destruction and brought to a true civilization in this world and eternal glory in the world to come it can only be by the direct intervention of God. The Christian knows that the divine intervention has taken place in the saving life and death of the Incarnate Son, and that the salvation for which we long waits upon man's acceptance of the divine redemption. Christianity is neither a philosophy nor an ethic but the religion of salvation, for mankind at large as well as for the individual soul, whose central mystery is the Cross which alone can make sense of the universe and guide our feet into the way of peace. It is with that mystery that this little book is concerned. It was originally preached as a course of sermons in the Lent of 1939, and I have not attempted to modify its original form or to expand it into a treatise, but publish it as it stands in the hope that, slight though it is, it may help some to a fruitful contemplation of the salient facts of the Atonement and a deepened apprehension of the divine mystery of the Cross.
