The following pages were originally written to inform the parishioners of Whalley of what appear to me to be the salient facts with regard to the use of vestments at the administration of the Holy Communion, in order that they might be able to form a considered and instructed opinion on the matter, and in the hope that they might be satisfied that, whatever individual preferences there may be, those who advocate the use of vestments, at all events at some celebrations, do so in strict and loyal conformity with law and authority in the Church of England, and only with the desire to add all possible reverence and grace to its great central service. The facts which the pamphlet contains and the conclusions which are drawn may be found set out at greater length and fully documented in the works of numerous liturgical scholars, to whose labours the writer is under no small obligation. Since it was first written the pamphlet has been carefully scrutinised and revised by the writer and by others better qualified than he, to whom he desires to express his grateful thanks.?
