BERMEJO, LUIS M - Grit And Grace: Life Of St. Teresa Of Avila

Title: Grit And Grace: Life Of St. Teresa Of Avila
Description: K.T. Mathew, India, 2002. First Edition, Softcover. Very Good Condition. 9788187886525 xi, 327 pages. Many people seem to be so overawed by Teresa's reputation that they hardly dare to approach her. They claim she belongs to a different world far beyond and above what we, poor mortals, ever hope to attain. To them Teresa means simply mystical prayer. Yet this is no more than a fraction of the reality and only one side of the coin. The other side is that she was an extraordinarily human saint. She was one of those rare personalities who combine qualities that seem to exclude on another and are seldom found together in an individual. She loved tenderly, yet would brooke no nonsense from anyone. She possessed both a strong self-image and an astonishing humility. A born leader, she was completely obedient to her Superiors. She could be a windmill of activity at one time and at another be lost in mystical contemplation. Though she was highly intelligent and amazingly efficient she gravitated towards simple men and women. The much-feared lightning from Rome finally struck: she was forbidden to proceed with her foundations and the Provincial declared her apostate and excommunicated. Teresa sent to the General a skilful, spirited self-defence. She will certainly obey, but obedience does not cancel out her extreme outspokenness: 'There are many reasons which you, being so far away, do not understand as well as - do here, and although women are not much use as counsellors, we are occasionally right'. She was accused of open disobedience. Here Teresa rises to the occasion and replies to the charge with some heat and even slight anger... She was a saint remarkable for her intense affectivity, who loved deeply her directors: 'It is permissible for me to have great affection for you and to show it in the dealings we have together, but it is not permissible for alI the other nuns to do so. I say and do things which are allowed to me... Please do not read in public the letters I write to you'. To a Sister: 'It is quite clear how much you love me... The love of my soul for you is even greater, for I am amazed at my affection for you. You must not imagine that I love anyone more than you. I don't know why I love you so dearly. I return your love and like you to tell me of yours'. The decree (from the Nuncio) was couched in such violent terms that Teresa wanted to stop her ears. lf the language was brutal, the contents were atrocious. Silently she left the parlour. By now she was an utterly defeated, broken woman. Back in her cell, she was heard weeping and sobbing uncontrollably: the work of her lifetime Iay now in ruins. And the tears were not precisely those of a woman caught up in a mystical flight of the spirit, but the bitter tears of a woman feeling completely crushed. Never before had she experienced such painful humiliation. Book - in Very Good card covers - slight creasing to the spine. Contents, clean, bright and tightly bound.
