N/A 3 CIVIL War Pamphlets Including 'the Remonstrance of the Commons of England': 'an Abstract out of the Records of the Tower Touching the Kings Revenue and How They Have Supported Themselves': 'a Letter of Spiritual Advice Written to Mr Stephen
Marshall... London. Hardcover. 3 pamphlets bound together in blue paper covered boards with a vellum spine, corners and board edges rubbed, front hing split but binding remains firm. The 3 Pamphlets are: 'An Abstract out of the Records of the Tower Touching the Kings Revenue and How They Have Supported Themselves' by Sir Robert Cotton, n.d, 27pp, binding a bit weak in places and early pages partially split in gutter.: 'A Letter of Spiritual Advice Written to Mr Stephen Marshall in His Sicknesse' by One of his Brethren in the Clergy, 1643, 18pp 'The Remonstrance of the Commons of England to the House of Commons Assembled in Parliament', 1643, 12pp, some soiling along lower margin just touching text in a few places but text remains legible. During the English Civil Wars and the period surrounding them the production of pamphlets expressing religious and political views was commonplace. This ephemeral literature is in many ways some of the most interesting printed material to emerge from this period of political and religious turmoil. The King's finances and his right to impose taxation and the Common's resistance to this were one of the causes of the Civil War. Stephen Marshall was preacher to 'The Long Parliament' and the Remonstrance echoes 'The Grand Remonstrance' of 1641, 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
