The Bloody Assizes were James II revenge on those who had participated in the Monmouth rebellion. While the Duke of Monmouth, who was Charles II illegitimate son, was mostly interested in securing the crown for himself the fact that James II was a Roman Catholic meant that in the popular imagination those executed at the Bloddy Assizes came to be seen as having died for the Protestant cause, 7" by 4.5".
