Summary: Both Dixon and Meares commanded trading vessels in the early days of maritime fur trade; both arrived for the first time on the N.W. coast of America in the summer of 1786. and both made numerous discoveries during their expeditions in that area. In 1790. Meares published his triumphant 'Voyages.' in which he recalled his involvement in the 'Nootka Sound Controversy' and boasted of his exploratory ventures in North America. Dixon contended that this account was largely false and that Meares had claimed credit which rightly belonged to others. Howay's synthesis of this bitter controversy includes Dixon's 'Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares.' Meares' refutation of these charges. and Dixon's 'Further Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares.Weight in Kg appr.:
