As the title indicates. the allusion is to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's cabin (Boston. 1852). reinforced by parallels drawn between slavery in America and the state of the Irish peasantry. The story is set mainly in Co. Limerick from the time of the Famine to about 1880; it deals with the hard life of the peasants. who are being evicted from their few acres. Some of them go to America to make a living. The landowner. a Mr Pakenham. thoughtlessly condones the evictions.
