Summary; The Royal College of Physicians of London is the oldest medical institution in England. Fellows of the College were expected to demonstrate that they were 'groundedly learned' and to continue with their academic endevours. Built up over almost five centuries the College collections provide a rich resource across many disciplines. The evolution of medical practice and the development of all the specialties can be traced through its contents. along with insights into personalities and society throughout the period. In 1656 William Harvey gave his private collection to the College and the Musaeum Harveianum was created. This broadened the collection to include 'curiosities'. globes and instruments. in addition to greatly increasing the number of books and manuscripts held. This is the first of a series of short monographs written by doctors and others interested in the history of medicine. They are intended to deal with illuminating aspects of the College's past and its collections. The Young Harvey has been published to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Harvey's association with the Royal College of Physicians of London and coincided with the appointment of the 14th Harveian Librarian.
