Summary; Relations between the grand physicians. the practical surgeons and the lowly apothecaries were strained in late eighteenth-century London. Each of the three branches of the profession jealously guarded its rights and privileges and their interests were often at variance. A dining club with representatives of each group has met since 1789. and perhaps earlier. initially at the St Alban's Tavern in St. James's from which the Club takes its name. The aim of the club was to foster better relations and a team spirit in the profession. Seven members of each group have met for dinner for at least 215 years and the records of their meetings are kept at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. This book traces the history of the Club and the 300 members who have belonged to it in the last 215 years. The thumbnail sketches of their careers lay emphasis on their hobbies. eccentricities and idiosyncrasies as well as their achievements in medicine and surgery. (Source: book cover).
