Summary; The treatment of madness and the rise of psychiatry in nineteenth century England have been well served by recent historians. but we lack a comprehensive overview of earlier developments. This book explores attitudes towards and treatment for madness in the age before the mass asylum and the emergence of the psychiatric profession. It shows how vernacular culture and Christian doctrine had traditionally offered explanations of insanity. and how these views were displaced by the secularizing mind of the Enlightenment. It explores early social policy towards the mad. and who this led to the piecemeal development of lunatic asylums. looking at the theoretical and practical aspects of psychiatric therapies. Not least. it probes what it felt like to be insane. or taken for insane. through analysis of the surviving writings of mad people themselves. The viewpoint of mad people. doctors and society at large are balanced in the study which is less concerned to trace the progress of psychiatry than to explore the many meanings of madness.
