Title: Aks-i partaw. A Series of Poems, containing the plaints, Consolations, and Delights of Achmed Ardebeili, A Persian Exile. With Notes Historical and Explanatory.
Description: Bristol: Printed by Bulgin and Rosser, for J. Cottle..., 1797. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 214 x 125 mms., pp. [x], xl, 276, pages 233 - 240 misnumbered 133 - 140, contemporary tre calf, rebacked, black morocco label; text slightly spotted, last two leaves a bit browned, corners worn, but a reasonably good copy, with the contemporary autograph of Mary Alsop 1816 on the top margin of the front paste-down end-paper. Fox (?1740 - 1809), initially a bookseller, lived in Falmouth and was possibly born there; his bookseller's premises burned to the ground, as as Robert Southey, one of the subscribes to this volume, noted, he realized that nothing could be saved, and "went upon the nearest hill and made a drawing of the conflagration—an admirable instance of English phlegm" (Letters from England, 3 vols., 1807, 1.6). He then made a walking tour of Sweden, Norway, and part of Russia, and on returning "settled in Bristo.... Here he developed his talent for languages and began a collection of Persian manuscripts. Fox's Poems, Containing the Plaints, Consolations, and Delights of Achmed Ardebeili, a Persian Exile was published by Joseph Cottle in 1797. Though praised for its literary quality and scholarship, Fox's volume was far less commercially successful. Indeed, having sold the copyright—together with that for Wordsworth's Lyrical Ballads—Cottle found that both works had been 'reckoned as nothing' by the publisher, Thomas Longman (Cottle, 2.26). A close friend to both authors, Cottle then regained the copyrights, returning to Fox his receipt for £20" (ODNB). Other subscribers to the volume were Samuel Taylor Coleridge and several members of the Fox family, including Josiah Fox of Philadelphia.
