Title: English Bards, and Scotch Reviewers. A Satire. [Second] Fourth Edition.
Description: London: Printed for James Cawthorne...and Sharpe and Hailes...., 1811. 8vo, 193 x 115 mms., pp. vii [viii blank], 85 [86 blank, 87 adverts, 88 blank, including half-title, 1052 lines, original printed boards, autograph of James Gibbons (of Ballnegall) on top margin of front boards, with an ms. note dated 1963 about the entry in Wise's bibliography for this volume with some information about Gibbons; spine faded and slightly worn, front joint worn. Writing to Robert Charles Dallas on 28 June 1811, Byron remarked, "My Satire it seems is in a fourth edition, a success rather above the middling run, but not much for a production which, from its topics, must be temporary, and of course be successful at first, or not at all. At this period, when I can think and act more coolly, I regret that I have written it, though I shall probably find it forgotten by al except those whom it has offended." The erudite notes are in the holograph of the Etonian and WWII POW and bibliographer/collector Walter John Armytage (1913-1980) of Halston House in Moyvore, County Westmeath, Ireland. Walter John Armytage was also frequently called Walter J. Armytage and W. J. Armytage. He is found in A. C. Fox-Davies, Armorial Families: A Directory of Gentlemen of Coat-Armour, seventh edition (1929), p. 50, and other similar reference books. With the contemporary inscription on the front board, and the twentieth-century collector now identified, this Byron item has interesting and pleasing two-pronged Irish provenance (thoroughly Westmeathian), with the rather substantial attestations by the later learned and armigerous Armytage being a distinct bonus. Wise, T. J. Bibliography of ... Byron, I, 26. Second fourth edition
