All the towns or villages mentioned in this three early tourist guides are located in the Peak District of Derbyshire. The first item, which appears to be unrecorded, was lithographed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789 - 1850), who was certainly one of the most important figures in the development of lithography in Britain. He set up shop in 1818 and in 1824 published his seminal text, The Art of Drawing on Stone. I couldn't find a copy of The New Panorama of Matlock, Buxton, and Castleton, but the printers were active in 1843. I located copies of Modern Chatsworth at the BL and at Yale. The last item, A Short Description of Castleton, in Derbyshire is a bit more common. It seems to have been printed as early as 1800, and a twenty-sixth edition was published in 1839. Copac lists at least thirty-three separate editions. Keywords: Travel topography prose Price: GBP 825.00 = appr.
