Description: Edinburgh and London William Blackwood and Sons, 1887. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 187 x 118 mms., pp. viii [ix Contents, x blank], 309 [310 blank]; [vi], 278, including half-title in each volume, original cloth, gilt spine and gilt lettering on covers; front hinges slightly cracked, but a very good set. Frederika Macdonald studied at the same Pensionat in Brussels where Charlotte Bronte had earlier been taught, and succumbing to the growing fanatical interest in Bronte later wrote reminiscences of the establishment. She was however a notable woman novelist in her own right, this her third novel has an interesting literary theme about a weak vacillating poet and a much stronger minded woman. The presentation of this set to the South Place, later Conway Hall, Ethic Society in the year following publication is most interesting. It suggests the Macdonald may herself have held humanist or atheistic views after her recent return from India, an aspect of her writing presumably never explored Keywords: fiction women literature Price: GBP 715.00 = appr.
